I have been thinking a lot about self sufficiency lately ... I've always been an funny mix of city girl / country girl - I love being near restaurants, galleries and my friends but at the same time I'm drawn to quiet moments in nature and constantly dream about a simpler life on a farm with my family and dog. We'd host dinner clubs, run a small clinic / apothecary where I could help people heal surrounded by nature, and live entirely off our own land (plus Kyle would have to finally say yes to my bee-keeping dreams if we…

Homegrown DIY Herbal Salt recipe from This Doctor's urban homestead  We're renovating! My husband and I finally bit the bullet and decided to add that extra guest room to our finished basement. After much negotiating / back and forth (I wanted a bedroom, hubs wanted a bar) we've decided that it's time to give our out-of-town visitors a proper place to stay. It's been three years since we bought our little bungalow in Toronto and started our very own urban homestead. It's always been a dream of mine to move out of the city and live off the land, but for the mean time my husband and I are cultivating our homesteading skills on our small property in the city. While our home is a tiny 1,200 square feet, our lot is huge for Toronto standards and we've been taking full advantage of our ample outdoor space. We're currently growing blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, mint, basil, parsley, leeks, onions, lettuce, kale, tomatoes, watermelons,…

Gluten-free + vegan holiday cinnamon buns, updated; to go along with my updated life. Holiday cinnamon buns have become a well-loved tradition for me. It's a long (most of the day) recipe that allows me plenty of time to reflect on the past year as I wait for dough to rise and yeast to activate. While there was nothing wrong with the O.G. bun recipe, there have been A LOT of changes happening in my personal life in 2022 and it felt appropriate that the cinnamon bun recipe should get a makeover as well. This year my mom got sick.…

Dense, tangy and incredibly tasty, I promise you this wheat-free 100% rye and spelt sourdough recipe is entirely worth the effort. So far we've made homemade kombucha, taught you about raising backyard hens, grown our own food (read about my top tomato tips here), and fermented our backyard harvest. Our latest urban homesteading adventure is the most ambitious yet: 100% rye and spelt sourdough bread-making. "Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… ” - Theodore Roosevelt I have to assume, after months of tears, burnt loaves, long drives (to procure the perfect starter),…
