Jambalaya is a quintessential one-pot dish from New Orleans, and while Mardi Gras has already passed that doesn’t have to stop us from enjoying some delicious Creole-inspired food. This dish tastes just like my childhood; not because I was raised in New Orleans or anything exciting like that, we just ate this dish a lot growing up. It's protein-packed, full of veg, and comes together quickly and easily at the end of the work day (with 2 entrepreneurs for parents, quick & easy was key on weeknights). I've added my own spin to this traditionally Creole dish by loading up the…

The leaves are still changing here in Ontario but I'm already thinking about the approaching winter. While winter in Canada is challenging at the best of times, I suspect that this season will be even more difficult than usual due to continued shut downs and social distancing orders. Cold grey winter days aren't so bad when we have tons of social engagements, holiday parties and romantic restaurant dinners in the books - without the usual distractions I'm personally going to need to work extra hard on keeping my mood and energy up this year. Here are a few of my favourite…

Garlic and honey are two of this doctor's go-to's for cold and flu season. I've been making up a batch of honey + garlic based DIY cough syrup every fall now for a few years (you can grab the recipe here) and only recently discovered that spicy garlicky-infused honey also happens to taste wonderful when paired with something crispy. Gone are the days of plugging my nose and taking down a daily spoonful of spicy pungent honey - I've chosen to embrace this unique flavour so I'm pouring quick and easy hot garlic honey onto roasted vegetables, using it in…

Today, I'm bringing you a quick hit of the gut health and immunity-building tips that I'm personally using to stay as healthy as possible in these crazy times. There is a lot of fear surrounding the current pandemic, and while most things about this situation are out of your control you do still have the power over your own personal health routines. To be clear, I'm not claiming that any of these strategies will prevent you from getting sick, but keeping your immune system in top shape is still obviously a good thing when it comes to overall health, immunity…

It's soup season! Honestly, I haven't been feeling particularly inspired to cook / write create this summer (as you can probably tell by the frequency of my recipe posts). We filled the post-quarantine sunny months with weekly trips to the lake, portaging adventures, 4+ hour walks and lots of distance-appropriate / covid-friendly socializing with our bubble. Every moment outside of work felt like it needed to be celebrated and occupied with something fun to make up for the months stuck indoors. While I'm certainly proud of my resilience and ability to make metaphorical lemonade during these difficult times I'm also…

Over the past few years I've been working on looking for the silver linings - the bright side of the dark parts of life. The current social, economical and political situation obviously isn't great but I'm still trying my best to look for the positives and find gratitude for the little things. This week I've been going a little stir crazy in our mini house and my income has taken a major hit with the clinic closed, but it's also given me the time to work on my online content, finish up my book and spend an insane amount of…

On the menu for tonight's dinner: Balinese chicken soup. Inspired by last year's trip to Bali, because it's cold, you're all sick, and I'm feeling incredibly wander-lusty at the moment. Travel is by far my biggest inspiration when it comes to the way I cook. I’ve learned so much in my travels to places like Nicaragua, Mexico, Tobago, Cuba, Costa Rica and Portugal, and I always come home from my trips abroad feeling inspired to cook and more connected to this beautiful world we live in. While I'm always up for a trip - this extra cold Canadian weather has…

I'm a firm believer that any recipe you make shouldn't just taste good for being gluten-free, dairy-free and sugar-free, it should just be delicious, period. I adore hosting friends and family at our home, it gives me so much joy to feed the people we care about (and maybe get them a little drunk on my favourite organic wines while I'm at it). I love the challenge of hosting friends who don't necessarily eat the way I do because it forces me to get really creative in my kitchen. My goal of a dinner party is to leave my guests…

Paleo Fish Tacos with Jalapeño Slaw + Spicy Sunflower Seeds This fish taco recipe has a lot of components, so bare with me here, I promise you all will be worth it come dinner time. I've made these grain-free paleo tacos weekly for most of the summer so trust me when I tell you that your taste buds will be blown away by the flavour combination of spiced white wish, creamy (dairy-free) jalapeño slaw and salty crispy sun flower seeds. Truthfully, there’s nothing particularly difficult about this fish taco, it just has a few extra steps than most of my…

Why you need to eat more healthy fats for balanced hormones.  A large portion of my hormone + fertility focused appointments revolve around optimizing my patient's diets. Great hormonal health begins with the foods you're putting in your body, so we naturally spend a good portion of time during initial consults discussing my patient’s daily food choices. At least once a day I have a new patient with PCOS, infertility, etc. sit across from me in a visit and proudly exclaim that they’re already doing a great job with their diet since stay far away from fats. This post is for…
