Dr. Sarah's Top 8 Anti-Aging Beauty Foods This month is all about helping you embrace and enhance your natural beauty from the inside out! There is truth to the old saying "beauty comes from within"; I've seen hundreds of patients in my own practice improve their outward appearance by simply changing the foods that they put into their bodies. It's possible to erase years from your face simply by changing your diet. The state of your skin is an outward reflection of how you treat your body, and I've seen patients start looking younger and glowing almost immediately after replacing processed junk with these wrinkle-fighting foods. The following…

Anyone who knows me well knows that mussels and frites (the homemade, baked, sweet potato variety - obviously) are absolute staples in my diet. There's nothing better than tucking into a hot bowel of garlicky mussels accompanied by a glass of one of my favourite biodynamic wines. While I've always loved mussels, I've only recently come to learn that my favourite food also happens to be wonderful for the health of my skin. Mussels contain a hefty dose of beautifying vitamins and minerals, including B12 vitamins, vitamin C, amino acids, iron, potassium and selenium. They are also an excellent source of…

Today, I'm spilling the secret on my favourite anti-aging tea recipe. I drink a cup of this homemade brew daily to provide my body with the essential beautifying nutrients needed for glowing youthful skin. After working on the skin of hundreds of patients I've quickly learned that most of what shows up on the skin is a direct response to internal factors. Your skin's main job is to act as a barrier between the internal and external environments. It's the first line of defence against external pathogens and the last organ to receive nutrients from the bloodstream.  This means that it’s important…

Spring is finally here! For many people, the cold winter months bring a chronic feeling of dry and dull skin. Thankfully, the hint of sunshine and rising temperatures of springtime naturally inject a glow back into winter-weary complexions. Check in over the next few months to learn all about natural skin care…

March is natural beauty month here on the blog. All month long I'll be sharing my favourite green beauty tips and even giving you a peak at how I'm preparing my skin, hair and body for my upcoming wedding. To kick off my series of natural beauty tricks, foods and tools I'm sharing with you my favourite ever beauty DIY recipe for all-natural homemade blush. I've always been very fair (excluding those few year in high school when I lived in a tanning bed - which I deeply regret) and I wear this blush almost daily to give my skin…

I created this Gut-Healing Gummies recipe for a patient who wanted an easy and convenient way to take her daily supplements. These tasty little treats are fabulous for digestive health since they contain three of my favourite gut-healing supplements. The following functional foods are an important part of any gut-healing protocol because they help to repair leaky gut and feed the good bacteria in your intestinal tract: Gelatin: Gelatin makes up almost a third of all of the protein in our bodies, and a dietary deficiency of this key nutrient can wreak havoc on your gastrointestinal system. Gelatin, which comes from animal bones,…

I love a bowl of creamy soup on a cold winter day but I often have a hard time finding recipes that don't include heavy cream or milk (I stay away from dairy for the sake of my skin). After many lacklustre attempts I finally nailed this recipe for potato leek soup using coconut milk instead of cream. This version isn't vegan since it still contains bone broth (another one of my tricks for glowing skin), but is completely dairy-free and full of flavour. We make a big batch of this almost every week and it's become my favourite warming winter-time…

Homemade DIY Lip Balm is a my favourite holiday gift idea. I've been working on perfecting my basic recipe for years and I finally feel like I've created a true winner. These lip balms are firm to the touch but soften beautifully upon contact with your lips. I've been creating my own homemade lip balms every since I discovered that store-bought lip products actually contain ingredients that dry out the lips, causing you to need to reapply constantly in order to keep your lips soft and smooth. They also typically contain ingredients than can cause irritation and even some that are…

Cold winds and dry indoor heating wreak havoc on the skin, causing it to become lack lustre and dry. While an excellent natural moisturizer most definitely helps, it can only take your skin so far. When it comes to achieving clear and beautiful skin, the real work begins on the inside. Lucky for me, my weekly bone broth habit supports my skin just as much as it benefits my digestive and immune system. Bone broth is one of my favourite winter go-to's because it's an excellent source of collagen, which helps to maintain skin elasticity and prevent wrinkles. Studies show that…
